Women on Motorcycles

June 12, 2007 · 5 Comments

The women riding on the backs of motorcycles are even more prevalent in the Punjab than in Delhi. In the most beautiful bright saris, covered from head to foot most of them, with scarves flowing around. It’s really a sight to see. When I saw one woman getting onto her ride I believe I glimpsed handles jutting out from either side of the seat. So the impression you get that they are riding hands-free may not be accurate.

I suppose, in India, riding with both arms around the waist of the man in front of you (even if he is your husband) would be – well – undignified. Dignity is something these women hold dear, and I’m in awe of them for it. Sitting there with their backs straight, head held high, secure in a stability achieved independently of the man in front of them.

Good pictures, Lori! India doesn’t really look like I expected it to look! It’s really neat that you can post pictures as you go along! Love, Mom

In my rush, I forgot a critical point here. These women in saris on the backs of motorcycles are all riding sidesaddle. Yee ha! More WOM
    photos to come.
